Abstract:
This seminar will present the outcomes of two different
randomized controlled public health trials in Western Alaska; one
successful, and one not successful. The first trial explored the
effectiveness of promoting xylitol to pregnant mothers to reduce
infant caries. The second trial focused on improving gun storage
in households to reduce the risk of firearm injury. Some of the
lessons learned regarding community-based trials, community
engagement and community readiness to change will be presented.

"Challenging Conventional Notions of 'Chronic'
Pain"
Kate Dunn, PhD
Visiting researcher, Group Health Center for Health
Studies
Senior Lecturer in Epidemiology, Arthritis Research
Campaign National Primary Care Centre, Keele
University, UK
Abstract:
Traditionally, chronic pain has been defined as pain
lasting longer than 3 or 6 months. This seminar will
outline a series of studies that have challenged this
definition. The conventional division into acute and
chronic will be examined and literature on prognosis
outlined. Work proposing a move from a purely
duration-based definition of chronic pain to
classifications incorporating knowledge of pain
prognosis will be described. Future directions for
researching 'chronic' pain and symptoms will be
highlighted.
