"Whose pyramid is it anyway? Examining the evidence base behind the dietary guidelines."
Jeannette Beasley, PhD, MPH
Women's Health Post-Doctorate Fellow, Group Health Center for Health Studies
Abstract: The USDA describes the development of the MyPyramid Food Guidance System as a "multiyear, multiple component research process". As evidenced by books such as "Food Politics" and "Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy: The Harvard Medical School Guide to Healthy Eating", others in the nutrition research community would disagree. This talk will examine the building blocks for the MyPyramid guidelines.

"Healing in primary care—What does it mean and how do we promote it?: A summary of two qualitative studies at Group Health."
Clarissa Hsu, PhD
Research Associate and Senior Program Manager, Center for Community Health and Evaluation, Group Health Center for Health Studies
Abstract: This presentation examines the findings from two related qualitative studies aimed at exploring different dimensions of healing in primary care (Dan Cherkin, Principal Investigator). The first study was aimed at understanding how patients and clinicians define and understand the concept of healing and to identify major facilitators and barriers to promoting healing in primary care. The second was aimed at understanding the openness of patients and clinicians to incorporating healing practices not typically associated with biomedicine into primary care. Both of these studies used focus groups to gather qualitative data from respondents about these topics. The results showed a remarkable consistency in how healing is defined, clear themes regarding what promotes healing in primary care, and an openness to having primary care providers recommend a wide range of healing options. Results from the first study were published in the Annals of Family Medicine. A manuscript for the second study is currently being drafted.
