    • CHS Scientific Seminar Series
"Challenging Conventional Notions of 'Chronic' Pain"
      Kate Dunn, PhD
Visiting researcher, Group Health Center for Health Studies
Senior Lecturer in Epidemiology, Arthritis Research Campaign National Primary Care Centre, Keele University, UK

      Abstract:
Traditionally, chronic pain has been defined as pain lasting longer than 3 or 6 months. This seminar will outline a series of studies that have challenged this definition. The conventional division into acute and chronic will be examined and literature on prognosis outlined. Work proposing a move from a purely duration-based definition of chronic pain to classifications incorporating knowledge of pain prognosis will be described. Future directions for researching 'chronic' pain and symptoms will be highlighted.
