Transforming Health Care Nationally

Group Health Center for Health Studies (CHS) influences health care nationally through the dissemination of its findings, its collaboration with other institutions, and its service to the scientific community.

Center investigators regularly publish their articles in leading medical journals such as New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of the American Medical Association, American Journal of Public Health, and Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Center investigators also contribute peer reviews to dozens of publications annually.

A majority of the Center's research studies involve collaboration with investigators from other research institutions, including:

  • University of Washington
  • Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center
  • University of California, Los Angeles
  • Harvard University
  • Duke University
  • Pennsylvania State University
  • U.S. Veterans Administration
  • RAND
  • Battelle
  • Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center
  • Kaiser Permanente Northwest
  • Kaiser Permanente Northern California.

Group Health Center for Health Studies is a member of the HMO Research Network, a group of 15 research centers based in integrated health care systems. The goal of the network is to foster collaborative research among HMOs and influence the national research agenda.

One major outgrowth of this group is the Cancer Research Network, headed by investigators from CHS and funded by the National Cancer Institute. Thirteen HMO research centers and one affiliate institution belong to the Cancer Research Network, which is studying cancer prevention and control services among nine million people enrolled in its member organizations.

CHS investigators regularly volunteer to serve on advisory groups and study sections for the National Institutes of Health, the Institute of Medicine, the National Cancer Institute, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the World Health Organization. Through their participation, CHS helps to shape research priorities nationally and around the globe.
